To maintain our nonprofit status and to maintain the trust of our contributors, we follow some fairly strict rules.
The IRLM does not endorse any political candidates, and does not participate in political fundraising. It's against the law for most non-profit organizations to do so. While individual members of the IRLM may participate in political activities, they may not use their court titles in such activities.
To maintain the confidence of our members and contributors, we are very open about our handling of receipts.
At the end of each event we must announce how much money we have collected.
Production expenses must be covered first. We've become very good at producing high-quality events on a shoestring budget. Many of our venues donate the space and services we use for events.
60% of our net proceeds go directly into our charity fund. This is disbursed to our beneficiaries over the year.
The remaining 40% of our net proceeds from any event go into our general fund. The general fund pre-pays the expenses for our Coronation Ball. It is also sometimes used to repair or replace our sound equipment.
After those expenses are covered, the remaining general fund monies are also disbursed to our beneficiaries.
All proceeds from our Coronation Ball go directly into our charity fund.
At no time do any of our members receive any salary or other direct compensation for their work.
We often distribute much more than 60% of our receipts for the year.
All of the money we distribute (our charity fund) must be used to help people in Santa Clara County. Our benificiaries must not use our contributions to pay for salaries or administrative expenses. Local chapters of national charities may not pass our funds on to their national offices.
These rules, and all others that govern the IRLM are in our corporate constitution and bylaws.
